One of my more recent influences is David Grisman. I was introduced to him just a few years ago when my uncle gave me a tape with a couple of his songs on it. I didn't like him right away. In fact, I listened to the tape one time and then put it into storage for a good year before I got it out again to listen. But for some reason, the second time around, it really caught my attention. I went out and bought an album.
David Grisman invented "Dawg" music; a funky mix of jazz, bluegrass, world music, and some others that I don't know the names of. He's a very prolific musician, and has more albums out than you can count, featuring other musicians from all styles and genres, including Jerry Garcia, former member of the Grateful Dead. |
What drew me to David Grisman's music was his compositional style, which seems to be limitless. He is one of those chameleon musicians who can imitate any style perfectly, and often seems to improve it. He is an excellent mandolinist, a brilliant composer, and has an effortless style of improvisation not often heard. More information about David Grisman can be found at his website.
